Water:Dance (2011) by Thomas Childs (b. 1977)
Cassandra Hibbard, clarinet
Water:Dance is based on an anecdote Dr. Hibbard told me about the paintings in the Music Auditorium (performers, beware what you say to composers...). People sometimes struggle to define the abstract paintings, but someone once told her very definitively that one was water, the other dancing. When she asked me to write a piece, I thought these two characters would create an interesting interplay.
In this piece, water is a gurgling stream, meandering and peaceful. Dancing is a reflection of a young girl's exuberance as she begins dancing as well as a mature woman reminiscing on the joys of those first freeing steps.
