Cosman Bishop
Cosman Bishop, a former Snohomish High School wrestler whose legs were amputated above the knee at age 3, has taken his career to Highline Community College.
Bishop, a 1996 Snohomish alumnus, finished second at 101 pounds at the Class AAA state tournament in February and set the school record for pins (15) while posting a 28-5 record.
The 19-year-old hasn't had as much success in college but enjoys the higher level of competition.
"It's fun, it's another challenge and it's another step up," said Bishop, who began wrestling when he was 9. "But it's a lot different than high school. . . . It's more competitive."
Bishop, who was born in Transkeia, South Africa, weighs 105 pounds and competes in the 118-pound weight class this season.
"He's not winning like he did last year," said Cosman's mother, Marita Bishop, who with her husband, Dr. Jon Bishop, adopted Cosman when he was 6. "He beats people once in a while, but wrestling is just an interlude right now."
Bishop, who lives in Des Moines, will head to Spokane Falls Community College next fall in pursuit of becoming a prosthetic and orthodic technician.
He hopes to play wheelchair basketball someday. This summer he attended one practice with a wheelchair team sponsored by the Seattle SuperSonics.
"It's something I'd love to do, and it's a lot of fun," he said. "But I really don't have much time for it right now." - Melanie Brennan
