Yes, Maestro Paul O'Dette is out of this world - but keep in mind that musicians of his stellar calibre practise ten to twelve hours a day when touring...
@thejugglenaut91 I'm glad to help. I made the lute with a chisel, a scraper, a saw, a small plane (block plane), a spokeshave, and a few other tools. It's mostly about being patient - the ribs take time to fit! But if you take your time and try to do good joinery, the work is worth it.
I wish you luck in finding one. I have built one (well, a baroque lute)as an amateur and the process is not as difficult as it looks - it's just time and care. Robert Lundberg's excellent book "Historical Lute Construction," which might be available through your library system, does a great job of showing how. It can be done with hand tools and patience, and it's completely worth trying.
I hope that one way or another you find an instrument
