One of the greatest exponents of the Patiala Gharana Ustad Amanat Ali Khan along with his younger brother Ustad Fateh Ali Khan sang as a duo and enjoyed immense prestige and success in the whole of Indian subcontinent, especially Pakistan and India. As youngsters the brothers were considered a singing sensation in undivided India. They are the grand children of Ustad Ali Baksh Jarnail who with his son Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan was patronized by the royal court of the princely state of Patiala and founded the Patiala gharana. Amanat Ali Khan and Fateh Ali Khan received early encouragement at the Patiala court. At the age of 17 and 14 respectively they were established stars on the musical scene of unpartitioned India. After partition of India their family settled in Pakistan. Overcoming many difficulties due to this sudden change of a well settled and rich home, the pair of brothers soon earned their rightful place amongst the foremost vocalists of the Pakistan and the whole of Indian subcontinent. President of Pakistan conferred the Pride of Performance Medal on them in the year 1969. Ustad Amanat Ali Khan died young in the year 1974 leaving the musical world a poorer place. Patiala Gharana founded by his grandfather is famous for complex taans behlawas and emoting the thoughts of the poet very deeply. He undoubtedly was a musical legend of Indian subcontinent and his magic still spell bounds the music lovers.
