This video is an experiment. The ending of "Three Smart Girls Grow Up", I think, is tainted a bit by all of the chitter chatter going on while Deanna Durbin is giving one of her greatest performances. So with this video, I have eliminated the movie audio and superimposed Deanna's studio recording on top of it. The studio recording is about 1 second slower than the version used in the movie, so I added a few blank frames in a couple of places to make her lips in synch with the music.

Performer - Deanna Durbin
Lyrics - Edward Frederick Lockton (using the alias "Edward Teschemacher")
Music - Helen Rhodes (pen name "Guy d'Hardelot")

Because, you come to me,
with naught save love,
and hold my hand and lift mine eyes above,
a wider world of hope and joy I see,
because you come to me!

Because you speak to me in accent sweet,
I find the roses waking `round my feet,
and I am led through tears and joy to thee,
because you speak to me!

Because God made thee mine,
I'll cherish thee,
through light and darkness through all time to be,
and pray His love may make our love divine,
because God made thee mine!

Written in 1902, this was first recorded by Enrico Caruso. It has the distinction of being one of the first major songs composed by a woman. A popular wedding song, Deanna Durbin performed this during the wedding scene in "Three Smart Girls Grow Up" and again in real life at her sister's wedding. This performance was recorded in 1938.

  • I own a DVD collection of Deana Durbin. This one is great, but my favorite is 'It Started With Eve'. In it, Deana and Robert Cummings made a great screen couple and were hilarious together.

I once watched a documentary on Anne Frank and learned that Deana was one of Anne's favorite singers. Interesting, but not surprising. Most girls (and women) in the '30's and '40's loved and idolized Deana. Too bad there aren't many (if any) singers with her vocal talent on the billboards these days.

  • I chanced upon a CD by Deana Durbin and then a DVD '100 Men and a Girl' acted by her. She played an honest little girl who found a purse and returned the same to the owner who was so impressed with her singing. She managed to convince Leopold Stokowsky to cancel his trip and conduct a 100 men orchestra. I Love her interpretation of Ave Maria by Bach-Gounod. There is so much sincerity in her sweet tonal rendition. I recommend it to all music lovers.

  • the best i have ever heard

  • Excellent job!

  • @djmolden The movie is Spring Parade - the song is Waltzing in the Clouds - you can find it under either

  • There used to be a superb clip of Deanna with Robert Cummings 1940 in Last Waltz where he conducted up a song and she sang and they danced an incredible scene..if anyone can find and repost it would be great.thanks

  • OMG... ALL new sopranos need to listen to this woman sing over and over and over until they can sound just like this incredible angel !! She is and always will be the best !!! MGM was just STUPID to get rid of her, there would have been room for her and Judy both, since they have such different singing styles.. what a DOPE that Louis B Mayer was to get rid of the lovely and splendid Deanna Durbin!

  • Love her music..what a voice. I remember a song "You belong to my heart" but cannot find it.

  • Just so, so so, so beautiful.

  • i think I was born a few decades too late
