Sorry about the lack of videos lately; between life and a numerous technical issues, its been a real pain to get videos out. I think I have most of them solved so hopefully videos will begin to fly out from here again.

Here is the Fluval G Series Show of Death Review part. I am basically doing an average review on the Fluval G series. I am trying to be as through as possible in these videos so if theres something I missed dont hesitate to let me know or ask. Also make sure you read these descriptions because I will usually get things I miss in these descriptions.

Anyways, so to sum it up these are reliable, luxurious, and just awesome filters. I havent had a problem with one yet (I know they havent been out for that long either) and even if you did you have Hagen/Fluval there to back you on the warranty/customer service. I know I didnt mention the specs of these filters in this video so I will post it below.

Really the only bad part about these filters is price. Thats it. I know this filter doesnt test your individual water parameters, but I doubt theres even reliable technology that could be implemented in these filters, that give you accurate readings, while not being off the chart expensive. Not to mention getting it to be displayed on an electronic screen. I pretty much name all the reasons to have one (if you cant tell immediately), and because there are so many, im not going to type it out. I will mention though, again, one of the good reasons to have one is how it uses its media. It has an excellent dwell time (time water is exposed to media) and the fact its a no-pass system. This means, even if its not a huge canister with tons of media in it, it will still play the part, because, it uses its media much more efficiently. This also means it can suitable for small and big tanks. Not to mention like I said the numerous other benefits like ease of use and maintenance.

As for spec on both of them:
One thing to note is, that the flow rates are not taken from what the motor/impeller do on its own with out any media or other obstructions. These are flow rates that will be coming from the actual output; not the just the motor max, like all other filters, so the flow is probably twice as much, so if your comparing, make that a note.

G6:
Max tank size: 160 gallons/ 600 L
Flow rate: 265 GPH / 1000 LPH (this is actually what the end product is, this is not straight from the motor, this is after all the tubing, fittings, and etc. and actually a little bit away from the output.)
Power usage: 120V 27W; 230-240V 28W
Media Baskets: 3

G3:
Max tank size: 80 gallons/ 300L
Flow rate: 185 GPH/ 700 LPH (read other note, this is not motor max output like all other systems are inaccurately done in. This what actually come from a little ways away from the output piece.
Power usage: 120V 18W; 230-240V 17W
Media Baskets: 2

Hopefully I got everything, if I was not through enough let me know!
If you have any questions, shoot me a message.

Thanks for Tuning In!

  • I've had a G3 since release and have replaced the mechanical cartridge many times. I'd rather use fiberfill or some other media. Any experience using your own media with a G3?

  • @mangoldm Only with the chemical medium. Why have you had to replace your mechanical? I still have the one mine came with. I got G6s pretty much on the release date, and still have their stock ones.

  • @AquariumTech thanks for the reply. My flow gets much better when I put in a new cartridge. I've never had a pleat tear, but they do get clogged. I only clean monthly instead of the recommended 2-3 weeks, but I'd be curious of your reaction if you installed a new cartridge.

  • @mangoldm Sorry im just not going to dish out the money for a new one. That brush that came with the filter is meant to get it unclogged. Also if that doesnt work, a good way I unclog it, is just hit it a bunch of times in the sink, you will be surprised how much shit comes off.

  • The 10 times turnover is based on HOB Power Filter performance. Canisters only need to turn the water over 5 times per hour to be effective.

  • @Bricksmama Well the point I was trying to make is GPH has little to do with how "good" a filter is. Sure its how much water can be cycled, but just because its being cycled doesnt mean its being filtered. I also talk briefly about something call dwell time, in this video.

  • @AquariumTech yes, I use the brush, take off the bottom, give it a good rinse.

  • @AquariumTech I agree. I was just commenting on that point since you said you weren't quite sure how/why that figure is floating around. I think it's mostly something the filter industry started putting out there to dumb down the consumer and make it easy for one filter to appear superior to another, simply by turning more GPH. Great vids BTW. I lol'd at your UGF breakdown. They are popular with shrimp breeders but I just can't do it.

  • Hi I love your video's as a am a new comer to setting up a turtle tank.I just got a fluval 4. You made it so easy to pop the back on...well I can't do it and I really need help. Would you sent me private message and maybe you can help me. PLEASE! T TeresaMy turtle is a bruiser and she just knocks it off. I really need help. Thanks doll....

  • @JulianROwen Im sure I say this in one of the videos at some point, but no they never need to be replaced. Though once in a while they might need to be rinsed out, which is what the schedule is for; because debris and other things can get stuck in it. Also the mechanical and chemical filtration will have beneficial bacteria doing work in/on them too, just not to the same extent. The only time you would have to replace your g-nodes, is when they start deteriorating, but that will take years.
