Take 70 pounds of molten glass on the end of a blowpipe, lots of trial-an-error glassblowing sessions, and a team of highly skilled glassmakers, and see what happens! At The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass, a team of gaffers, led by George Kennard, have created the World's Largest Blown Glass Pumpkin.

  • What is that grainy sandy-rock thing they were rolling the glass in?

  • It's crushed colored glass. It melts onto the surface of the hot clear glass and adds color to the piece.

  • In our studio courses and with our staff demonstrators, we provide alcohol wipes and ask that people use these after blowing into the pipe. You'll see numerous signs posted with this reminder.

In our public Make Your Own Glass experience, we provide disposable cardboard mouthpieces for each visitor, as well as alcohol wipes. In addition, we put the ends of the pipes in the 2300 degrees F glory hole as needed.

  • @cammigurlgonewild

the colorants are metal oxides that heat to a certain color, like "blued" steel per se. the grainy sandy stuff in the question above is actually glass with the colorants added at the premelted stage where it is the minerals batch that will be melted down, so its never actually clear glass, just color thats crushed up
