Operation Neptune is a 1995 educational game by The Learning Company and SoftKey Multimedia. Players use the mini-submarine Neptune to collect pieces of the malfunctioning Galaxy space capsule. Along the way, they solve story-appropriate math problems for their crew, deal with aquatic life, and collect audio logs that explain Galaxy's fate. The game features a harder difficulty mode with advanced math and more challenging environments for older players.

This video shows the game's introduction and first two levels. The clip was recorded from the CD re-release of Operation Neptune, as opposed to the game's more widely available DOS version.

Thanks to a heads up from CallinWire: based on the accents, these videos may come from a version of the game localized for Europe. There appear to be quite a few editions of this CD-ROM version of this game, with major differences in music quality, voice accents, and other regional changes.

  • What did you use to tape this?

  • @Lingyan203 I ran a copy of Windows 3.1 in DOSBox, which has a built-in record feature. It's very very handy. :)

  • That's strange. The version I played had people with American accents speaking, not British. Looks like they had different versions for both regions.

  • Now that you mention it, that IS true. The copy I originally played had American voices too. However, there's no indication that the version I'm using right now is localized or specialized for Europe; none of the spellings are different.

  • In one of this video's puzzles it has "kilometres" and in another video it has "kilometers", so I guess it was localized. So that means there are at least 4 English versions of this game, maybe more.

  • Here's another weird one: the ballast puzzle hint talks about "20p pieces," but the thermometer puzzle is still in Fahrenheit. I'm very, very confused.

  • Wow. It sounds VERY different when it's not using the old school PC speaker. It wouldn't do voices at all.

  • This was my favorite game when I was little. The music is so catchy!

  • omg i remember this...

  • this game was siiiiick

  • This might just be my lack of knowledge with the British accent, but the voice acting seems somewhat sedated / uninterested. Like, "Yeah, Galaxy crashed... I guess we'd better do something about that..."

  • Wow! I remember playing this when I was like 5 along with reader rabbit and I could'nt understand what they wanted us to do.

  • @Obscuritory Which version of DosBox? And how did you get the Windows version of the progam to run on DosBox?

  • @CallinWire This is the only version with UK voices that I've seen
