My first pipe was a custom churchwarden by Pipes By Design. It's still my favorite smoke. I've got two others now, a small Savinelli Bulldog & a Randy Wiley. I was excited for the bulldog, but was extremely disappointed. The Randy Wiley smokes great & if I didn't have my churchwarden, it'd be my favorite.
My roommate got into pipe smoking & bought a Dr. Grabow. I tried it & hated it. I could tell the difference & I'll never buy one.

I tend to add pipes to my collection that use paper filters. In my experience, the metal filters of the higher end pipes although reusable, are too small, easy to loose, and tough to clean. Paper filters can be changed every time so you know you'll have a fresh smoke and they're readily available. I've only seen the paper filters in my lower end pipes and that's why I like them. On another note my lower ends don't smoke as hot as the higher ends, which is another plus.

So far my favorite is a Dunhill second rustic straight billiard, it's similar in size to your Du de carlo a fairly big bowl pipe, it's my first higher range pipes at $45 being a big thing since I'm in college and budgeting etc...and if I may where did you purchase your Savinelli semi-church I prefer small bowl pipes and any feedback would be great. Thanks!

I started out with a cheap basket churchwarden and now have added some lower end Petersons and a Butz- Choquin, and a middle priced Savinelli. Looking to collect more Petes and Savs though, love the way they both smoke.

Hey great topic! I started out on cheap pipes, they smoked fine. I got introduced to Peterson pipes, Savinellis, etc and I found they smoked better, less gurgle etc. And that is a SWEET replica pipe! I say smoke what you like to smoke, I have a few high end pipes, but most are middle priced. Let a thousand pipes bloom! Cheers!

Another nice vid. I'm still starting out, and haven't picked up any Savinelli's yet. I started off with a few cobs, and then kind of went straight into higher end pipes, estate and new.
Hi.
Big Ben is a well known pipe brand in europe. They are made in Holland and "London style" would be the grade. Big Ben's are priced from about €35 to the low hundreds (for silver spigots and such). I own 3 or 4 Big Ben pipes, some smoke fine, others don't... Savinelli and Stanwell are always a safer choise. The stem looks like from another pipe (probably a Vottis pipe - google it). Big Ben's logo is a script "B".
Cheers

@RequiemPipes Wow! Thank you! That makes so much sense now because a while back I googled the emblem on the stem and it did not match up with any of the pipes I found under "Big Ben." You are a gentleman and a scholar.

Grabows are fine but I recently had a problem where heat blisters appeared on the outside of the bowl. I'm told that was from smoking the pipe too hot but I must say it never happened with any of my other pipes. Anyway, they are a decent smoke for the money.

@pipejonnyc hmmm... I have had that happen on a few of my Savinellis too. I was wondering what that was.
