Yiannis Ritsos
(May 1, 1909 November 11, 1990) is considered to be one of the four greatest Greek poets of the twentieth century, together with Kostis Palamas, Giorgos Seferis, and Odysseus Elytis. The French poet Louis Aragon once said that Ritsos was "the greatest poet of our age." He was unsuccessfully proposed nine times for the Nobel Prize for Literature. When he won the Lenin Peace Prize (also known as the Stalin Peace Prize prior to 1956) he declared "this prize it's more important for me than the Nobel".

And so, my brother,
At last we have learned how to discuss
Quietly, peacefully and plainly.
We understand each other now;
Nothing more is needed.

And tomorrow, I say,
Things will be even simpler.
We will find the words
That carry the same weight
In all hearts,
On all lips,
So that, from here on,
We can tell things as they are;
We can call a spade a spade.

In this way others will smile
And say:
I can write a hundred such poems
In an hour
That, after all, is what we want,
Since, brother,
We do not sing in order to be
Conspicuous in the world.
We sing
To unite the world.

Και να αδερφέ μου
που μάθαμε να κουβεντιάζουμε
ήσυχα, ήσυχα κι απλά.
Καταλαβαινόμαστε τώρα
δε χρειάζονται περισσότερα.

Κι αύριο λέω θα γίνουμε
ακόμα πιο απλοί.
Θα βρούμε αυτά τα λόγια
που παίρνουνε το ίδιο βάρος
σ' όλες τις καρδιές,
σ' όλα τα χείλη,
έτσι να λέμε πια
τα σύκα-σύκα
και τη σκάφη-σκάφη.

Κι έτσι που να χαμογελάνε οι άλλοι
και να λένε:
"Τέτοια ποιήματα
σου φτιάχνω εκατό την ώρα".
Αυτό θέλουμε κι εμείς.
Γιατί εμείς δεν τραγουδάμε
για να ξεχωρίσουμε, αδελφέ μου,
απ' τον κόσμο.
Εμείς τραγουδάμε
για να σμίξουμε τον κόσμο.

και να που η εξαθλειωση, η πείνα , η ανεργία μας εκανε "να κουβεντιάζουμε ήσυχα ήσυχα και απλά καταλαβαινόμαστε τώρα...." Μόνο ο Ρίτσος θα μπορούσε να εκφράσει διαχρονικά την ψυχή του Ελληνα

Η Ελλάδα είναι μία! ζυμωμένη με τις παραδόσεις και την ορθοδοξία! Κανείς ποτέ δεν κατάφερε κι ούτε ποτέ θα καταφέρει να χωρίσει Ελλάδα και Ορθοδοξία! Και οι πολιτικές παρατάξεις μάθετε ότι δεν μπορούν να νιώσουν αγνά την ελληνικότητα που μας συνδέει ή την λιτή κι αυθεντικά εκφρασμένη από τον Ρίτσο αγάπη για την αδερφικότητα! Μην βάζετε σε κουτιά τον Ελληνισμό!
