  • I think it has plenty of things wrong with it, but a lot going for it. It has an atmosphere which many films can't match, but as narrative and character study, it feels half-backed and truncated.

The 40 minutes that have been cut could change it, and Pacino really felt that the character was ruined by the missing footage.

Pacino is also great in spite of the film, and its the last "classic" Pacino performance. Starting with Scarface, we'd get the over-the-top, gravely voiced Pacino.

  • I only just recently saw the film and can hardly believe it was made. A real break from portraying gay men as weak and effeminate and to have a big star in it was well. Yes sure it can be seen as homophobic but I think for 1981 it is amazing it was made at all.

  • Where is Sam Kinison when you need him

  • probably smells great in there :-\

  • @sfknns I meant on another one of your comments, you didnt mention Scarface. xD

  • @ColdBishop U think Scarface is overacting?Wow man, thats one of his best, why do u even watch him if u think he's ham?Jon Avnet's 88 mins. is from 2007 and Jack and Jill with Sandler kind of just came out.He aged?- thats why he had cosmetic surgery in 1990 if u didnt knew. And u can't know what happend with his physic.IF U THINK HE'S HAM OVERACTOR WHY HAVE U WATCHED''PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING HE'S DONE''?AL IS ONE OF THE FEW REAL ACTORS LEFT AND IF U DONT LIKE HIM IT MEANS UR TASTELESS

  • @interneda98 I've seen practically everything he's done (at least until he started doing Sandler comedies and Jon Avnet snoozefests). The fact is, starting right after this, he turned largely into a ham. There's also a pretty noticeable physical difference roughly beginning at this point (I swear the guy aged three decades in the 80s).

And Scarface is Exhibit A in the case of Pacino the Overactor.

  • @possum19901990 , LOL yeah I mentioned Scarface!

  • @sfknns Don't forget Scarface, Lol

  • @ColdBishop WHAT?Al Pacino himself said he thinks his 2 worst roles are in Revolution and Cruising. He said that when the film is good like Revolution then ur bad workd is a disaster but when the movie aint so good like Cruising it doesnt matter that much. Trust me ive seen all movies with him...and there are WAAY BETTER movies he made after 1980. I bet you havent seen much of his work.

  • @whoagigi i wouldn't say it is his worst film but it is hardcore he was very brave to do a film like this in the name of art & cultural diversity....

  • The gay rights protests about this movie in NYC were about the way they, the gay rights protesters, thought or assumed William Friedkin would portray gay men in this movie. But for those of us old enough to know and who were regulars in gay bars in the late 1970s and early 80s, the pre-AIDS years, "Cruising" is a pretty accurate depiction of the gay-bar scene and the urban gay liftestyle of that time in any large North American city. So I really don't know what the protesters were objecting to.
