The Original Broadway Cast of Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods perform Second Midnight, a song cut from the final version of the show. The song features sections cut from the full version of Children Will Listen, heard in many solo performances of that song. Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, Chip Zien, and the complete original cast perform with piano.

  • is this from the rehearsal bootleg tape that went around years ago? (audio only don't get excited! :) or maybe that was when ellen foley was doing the witch (san diego premiere) I don't remember and Louanne Ponce was Little red...I just remember the end was soooooo weird. The ending tag of the song was Jack saying "Oh...BEANS!" (or something like that) as if it was the punchline of a joke that he just now got...

  • It certainly sounds like a rehearsal, given the piano. I don't have a whole recording, I got this track along with a few other cut songs (such as those included in the new CD reissue) There is also (what sounds like) a rehearsal of Bernadette doing the Witch's Rap, but it's nearly identical to how she performs it on the CD and DVD. If a full rehearsal audio exists, I'd love to hear it.

  • I think it would work brilliantly in the show! People often criticise Into the Woods and that the middle of Act One becomes too full of monologues, Giants in the Sky, I Know Things Now, Agony, Steps of the Palace - I think this would have picked it up a bit from a descent into an Act One full of single characters or pairs of characters singing their individual stories; another company number that's a little easier to digest than the Opening would be a great addition to the show I think.

  • Does anyone else think he might have utilized this cut song while writing "Something Just Broke" for Assassins?

  • love that ending. genius.

  • Wow, what an interesting find! It's a really good song, but I can understand why this song was cut. It didn't really fit in with the rest of the show.. Though it would have been a great addition to the OBC recording at the end along with Back to the Palace, Boom Crunch, and the early version of Giants in the Sky (at least I think that those were cut... ^^'')!

  • For some reason this reminds me of the Whos in How the Grinch Stole Chistmas

  • I wish this stayed in. It gives so much more insight into the characters. <3

  • @michaelmouse1 I don't want to sound stupid but I'm really confused. So the audience got confused about what was going on in the show and drowned themselves while literally saying the words "first version" and "second version" while their children listened? Where was this? I'm really sorry but I just don't get what happened and it's really bugging me.

  • @helencheddar I was the stepmom, somebody who doesn't have many lines, so everything was pretty much cut. Now I'm working on urinetown tho, so its 'aight.
