Published on Dec 4, 2012

Reason TV's Kennedy sits down with Reason Editor in Chief Matt Welch to find out what's in the newest issue of the nation's only magazine of "Free Minds and Free Markets."

The January 2013 edition of Reason has just newsstands and features articles about avoiding the fiscal cliff, Veronique de Rugy on how (and why) to cut defense spending, and Ronald Bailey on how your cellphone is spying on you. There's also a brand-new Peter Bagge cartoon essay about Detroit, Jesse Walker's survey of apocalypticism in American culture, and Jacob Sullum's latest dispatch from the marijuana wars.

The cover is an original drawing by the great hot-rod-punk-rock-artist Chris Cooper - a.k.a. Coop. Read more about him here: http://www.coopstuff.com/

A year's subscription costs just $14.97 for 11 issues (the discount grows with multi-year subscriptions). Subscribers get the print magazine weeks before any of the material shows up online and the cost of subscribing helps underwrite Reason.com and Reason TV as well as the production of the mag itself.

If you're thinking of subscribing, you might want to consider making a tax-free donation to Reason Foundation, the 501(c)3 nonprofit that publishes the magazine and this website. We're hosting our annual webathon this week and a gift of $100 will nab you a subscription plus a classic black Reason T-shirt as well (did we mention all donations are tax deductible too?). The more you give, the more swag you'll get.

Go here for more information on making a donation to Reason Foundation.

The magazine preview was produced by Joshua Swain and is about 3.30 minutes long.

Go to Reason.com for downloadable versions and sign up at Reason TV's YouTube channel to receive automatic notification when new material goes live.

Oh please. What enemy? Where are you getting this stuff? CHINA'S army is the largest in the world. And we are afraid, because we need that power to hunt down jihadists whose stated goal is our death. And we are not trying to conquer the world. We are trying to stop others from doing so. If you can not understand this then you are lost.

Blowback from what? We had done NOTHING. The real reason that they attack us is that we are rich, and they are not, and like idiots everywhere they blame they rich.

Yes, whoever thought up "a lighter footprint" is an IDOIT. I don't see why using chemicals is so bad, the guy is already a war criminal far targeting indiscriminate weapons (Scuds) at civilian areas, so if we are not to do a thing about that... just don't let the crazies get the chemicals or the Scuds, they will use them.

I'm pro-life too, but there are other issues. I'd argue the nation-building was bungled before BO even became POTUS. I wouldn't be surprised if Assad did use chemical weapons, but even if he does, I hope we stay out of it. If the EU wants something done about it, they can foot-the-bill for it & go do it themselves, IMO.

Same here, but given that Assad now has WMDs (chemical) I think that it is VERY likely. The nation building is mainly being bungled by Obama, but it can be said that it may be a lost cause in the first place. Gary Johnson's problem is his inability to get in the primary, but I am pro-life. The GOP is broken. An utter joke. I don't know the GOPs stance anymore, but I do think that sane, "commando" type, intervention is justified.

Yeah, I do believe (although I can't prove it) that those trucks leaving Iraq into Syria had the WMD mother lode on them. Even then, Saddam was violating a lot of UN resolutions, but the nation-building isn't working. Would you vote for a guy like Gary Johnson? Do you believe the GOP is too interventionist?

Yes. In 20/20 hindsight Iraq looks like a mess, but remember, they had WMDs. WMDs now in Syria.

"needed for overseas" For what? Just in case we have an actually-declare war that isn't a nation-building mess? I do understand what you're getting at & appreciate your thoughtful rebuttals, but it appears you're a bit too interventionist.

Longshot, but too risky. Agree. Yes, but the Reserves are needed for overseas.

Oh please! You're certainly a lot more knowledgeable than most on this subject, a "Red Dawn" scenario, although entertaining is a big longshot. IMO, scud-in-a-bucket or a ballistic missile attack from some rogue state at a long-distance is probably a much more likely scenario, don't you think? "BIG reserve" Couldn't that void be filled by the National Guard?

Yes. I agree with the small standing army, but have a BIG reserve. As for Red Dawn, we can't be to careful.

Would you agree that the biggest threat to us is a rogue nation firing a missile at us? Nobody is going to come in & take over (ala Red Dawn), there are too many civilian weapons here & our Navy is the best in the world. A smaller standing army (less active-duty) is a good idea. It would save $ too.
