CHAN:
A ferocious typhoon has slammed into the Philippines leaving death and destruction in its wake. Here's more on the story.
STORY:
Typhoon Nuri killed five people in northern Philippines on Wednesday, brining heavy rainstorms. Schools in the region and in the capital city, Manila, were forced to close. Three children and one adult were killed by a mudslide, triggered by the typhoon.
The country's chief weather forecaster says that Nuri packed winds as high as 105 miles an hour. The storm is now battering Taiwan.
Airline officials say at least five flights were canceled due to the rain, while traffic in the capital slowed to a near standstill.
Typhoons from the Pacific Ocean regularly hit Philippines. A storm in June killed about 300 people and caused the capsizing of a crowded ferry, in which another 800 people perished.
The news coverage indicated how the typhoon brought traffic to a stand still.. What amazes me about Asians is how they go about their normal business in Typhoons. When we have hurricanes in the States, everything shuts down. In Asia ferry's still operate and people are walking around in the cities
