If a Klingon couple ever became Mormons, "I am a Child of God" is the song their children would sing with Klingon gusto! Linguist Beth Moore translated the beloved children's song on a dare while a student at BYU for a class. She occasionally will sing it for church talent shows. I hope you enjoy it, not only for the treat of hearing the unusual juxtaposition of a children's song with an invented language, but also for the message in the original English language that inspires children and adults in its simplicity and beauty. We are all children of God -- even fans of Star Trek!

Here is the literal translation direct from Beth (the video uses the original English version):

I AM A CHILD OF GOD: IN KLINGON

puqbe' Qun'a' jiHtaH
"A daughter of God I continuously am"
(NOTE that a man would say "puqloD Qun'a' jIHtaH" - puqloD meaning "son")

'ej nadev mungeHta'
"And here he sent me"

tera'Daq juH vavoypu'
"A home on earth and beloved parents"

je munobta'
"He gave me"

HIDev! retlhwI'Daq yIyIt!
Lead me! Walk in my beside-area!"

He'a' HISammoH
"Cause me to find the Way!"

Hoch 'e' jIta'nISbogh HIghojmo'
"All that I need to accomplish, cause me to learn it"

matay'laH Qun'a' jiHtaH
So we can be together, God and I

(Oh geez, I just realized I screwed up my Klingon grammar on that last line. *facepalm* It's supposed to be "vaj matay'laH Qun'a' jIH je".)

Her name is Beth Moore.
She is a wife and mom.
She is a linguist.
She is a fan of Star Trek.
And she is a Mormon.

  • And we wonder why the world thinks Mormons are weird? You are not helping our image.

  • @DanishMamaBlog

True, it is no "Ode to the Geonosian Starfighter" like you have posted on your video channel. But what image do you want? Scrapbooking artsy Scandinavian home crafters are ok to be Mormons but Trekkies need not apply? ;-)

  • And the people who didn't think we were weird before... ;)

  • @Wurbyfu "We are different, we are strange; we're weird! It's just what Mormonism means -- it's the religion of the weird -- here we are and we love it! (Audience Laughs) And that's just something we have to live with, it's one of the insults of our religion that we have to bear. So that's my first comment." -Richard L. Bushman

Add the high level of prejudice and bigotry people have for geeks and geeky things and the combination is disconcerting to some -- but that is not the goal. ;-)

  • @DanishMamaBlog So were they normal when they created their own alphabet? This is perfectly Mormon.

  • To me, Mormons are more symphatic now.....

  • @drj2749 I haven't memorized a Klingon song--I only know a few lines...

  • @MinisterAilingTongue Wow, you're a bigger nerd than she is :)

  • @DanishMamaBlog yes, this video is the reason that people think Mormons are weird. Not anything else.

  • HAHA! Great fun! People take Star Trek and themselves way to seriously just enjoy it!

    KaPlaq!

  • Well done! I'm impressed! :)

  • Everyone does realize that the Klingon myth says the Klingons slew their own gods. Klingons are atheists. They have Sto' Vo' Kor, the Barge of the Dead, and all that, but they have no gods. Hmm hmm!

  • this could be the person needed to help push along work on the Klingon translation of the bible and some klingon shakespeare as well!
