An excellent speech to the jury, reminding them of their sacrosanct power and civic duty to do justice, even if it violates law; that one can be innocent, though guilty "in law." (from "Rumpole of the Bailey," series 6, episode 1: "a la Carte")
You do not know what his lawyers advised unless you were sitting in on the conference . . . Lawyers advise - but defendant decides - don't confuse this basic premise (which to be fair most people do not properly understand.)
What was the Martin case about really? The most salient facts were not disputed, the two victims burgled Martins farmhouse, he fired on them without warning. There was some level of premeditation in his deeds, he had acquired a shotgun for the purpose of injuring intruders. Yet, he plead Not Guilty, because he had a strongly held conviction that regardless of the letter of the law no English jury would convict him, strangely his lawyers did not advise against his plea?
Hey pal, if you an convince the jury I deserved to be shot fair play to you, not much I could do about it. And yes I love the idea of burglars being killed, their deaths make my day, genuine vermin who wreck lives. There is a really clear way of not getting killed for being a burglar.....don't be one. Simple ain it?
I have no fear of the concept of burglars getting killed, I'm not one and nor is anyone I care about, so sod it if one of them gets shot.
Can't see where I've been racist. Am I small minded because I don't feel sorry for a subhuman dying like the vermin he was? Or his 'friend', his fellow gypsy, leaving him for dead? Lotta loyalty there.
screw the law he's right its justice
