Koko did not ask to become an ambassador for her species. She just happens to be the only gorilla in the world qualified for such a position.
After all, she can speak to us in our own language, and she possesses the charisma, good nature, and world renown for people to listen. Circumstances have thrust her into a position of being an ambassador for her species — something more powerful than a data point on a chart. Koko reminds us that humans have a unique opportunity to save gorillas and other great ape species from an imminent human-caused extinction. By simply recognizing their right to exist in peace, we can take the first step towards their preservation.
Lesson: Koko is truly an ambassador for her species, as well as other great ape species, and for nature itself.

you should try to teach koko how to read.... if she teaches her fellow apes, then there might be a second civilzed race. koko can probably be the key to it happening
