Q: What's a WAD?
A: A WAD is just another name for a Wii Channel and all its contents (in this case, a Wii Virtual Console game). You've been using WADs for as long as you've had your Wii; you've just never noticed.

Q: How do I get this WAD on my Wii?
A: Your Wii must be modified to run homebrew programs. Particularly, you'll need a program called WAD Manager to install the WAD onto your Wii's internal memory. There are many good tutorials on how to hack your Wii properly, and WAD Manager can easily be found on the search engine of your choice.

Q: What's the difference between the two WADs?
A: The first WAD installs alongside a standard MM installation, allowing you to have two copies of the game on your Wii at once. The second overwrites a standard MM installation, meaning you can only have one copy of the game on your Wii at a time.

Q: How should I choose which version to install?
A: The standalone version is backwards compatible with all "official" MM saves, something the other version lacks. Honestly, unless you plan on submitting a run to SDA or somewhere else (which will undoubtedly reject your run for using an "unofficial" version), I would recommend using the standalone version just for that feature alone.

Q: I used the standalone version to overwrite the official channel, and now I want it back. What do I do?
A: If you bought the game from the Wii Shop, you just have to delete this custom channel, and then re-download it from the store. To delete this custom channel, click the "Wii" button on the Wii Menu, then go to "Data Management", then to "Channels". Select the "MM Graphical Fix" channel, and then select "Delete". If you have a WAD of the official version sitting around, you can also restore it just by installing the official WAD through the WAD Manager.

Q: Do the WADs have custom Save Icons/Names?
A: The standalone version does not have any customizations to the save, because it uses the same save as the "official" version. The alongside version does have a custom Save Icon (a picture of the game's title projected over a flickering torch), but it does not have a custom Save Name because MM uses a weird format to store that data, preventing me from modifying it like other N64 WADs. Hopefully, the custom Save Icon is clear enough.

Q: Do these WADs look exactly like the N64 version?
A: No. I've fixed everything I could, but the bottom line is this: Nintendo's built-in emulator is terrible. Some textures don't even look like they're being rendered at all (the carnivorous flowers in Woodfall Temple are supposed to be pink, but they appear black on VC), while other effects just look wrong (the Dinalfos' flames are the wrong color, for example). This is the best-looking MM experience you'll get on the Wii, though, unless Wii64 seriously picks up steam (and considering how fast even Nintendo is abandoning the Wii, that's likely never to happen).

Q: Why did they make Goron Link darker in the official VC release? Why are the torches so dark and small? Why do the Bubbles look so stupid?
A: No one knows.

  • Do you have to use the classic controller for this? (I read elsewhere that you did.) Or can I use my GC controller?

  • @themasternateshow

Like other Virtual Console games, you can play this with a GCN controller or a Classic Controller.

  • the bombchu shade was pretty dark when it lit uo. Is that fixed?

  • @noscreenname1

No, that's an emulator error. I can't fix that without rewriting/modifying the emulator (which no one knows how to do), so I didn't bother with it.

  • I cant get this wad to work :/ help anybody?

  • @Arturoxtei

If your Wii isn't American, make sure to region-free the WAD. If you're using the replacement version, it should work exactly like the official US version, so if you can install that, then you can install this WAD. If you're using the alongside version, it still is basically a modified US version, so it should still work fine if you can get the US version working.

  • @logos2600 Well games and consoles take up space, so it's nice to go digital.

  • Any chance you can fix the VC Paper Mario?

  • This is just more reason why the original console is the only way to play...are you going to go through every element in the game and correct it?

  • I'm glad I have good eyes for spotting these kind of things. Then again, maybe it's a curse? :p

  • for some unknown reason, the PAL version has the better effects.

  • What about the Gamecube version?
