ZHANG:
In Geneva today, Chinese officials are facing questions from the United Nations Committee Against Torture.
The Committee Against Torture is responsible for monitoring whether member states are upholding the U.N. Convention Against Torture, which China has ratified.
Nineteen human rights groups from around the world have submitted reports to the committee about Chinas use of torture. These groups include the Conscience Foundation, Amnesty International, and Human Rights in China.
The committee is examining Chinas use of violence against dissidents, democracy activists, minority groups, human rights campaigners, and Tibetans.
Several of the submissions also include reports of torture and death in custody of Falun Gong practitioners, including reports related to organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners.
In an interview with the AP, one Amnesty International representative says the U.N. Committee needs to press Beijing for a response about reports that it is holding Falun Gong practitioners and others in covert black jails and hiring, quote, "thugs" to attack and harass human rights lawyers.
The U.N. Committee Against Torture will adopt a concluding observation on Chinas Fourth Periodic Report before the session ends on November 21st.
I love how the COmmittee against Torture is going so far.
Way to uphold the Torture Convention!
