Yes A1s are still used. If the rifle still works then there is no point in making new ones if you already have the same rifle. It is basically the same rifle and the Army is on a budget. In fact some of the old M14s have been taken out of storage and given to soldiers.

I hate all the credit the M16 gets for its "revolutionary" direct gas system. The Swedish AG42 and French MAS49 used direct gas systems decades before the M16.

I love the look of these old m16s, instead of these new "high-tec" models, blech

Yea the ak47 was a winner cuz of how much the bad gunpowder and the no cleaning kits made the m16a1 fail if they had good powder and cleaning kits this is the best version of the m16 and the ak47 and it should have like tied. And yea

@camoflaguemonkey The problems were due to our guys not being told how to clean their rifles, and even that it wasn't necessary. The barrel also lacked a chrome lining which made that issue much worse (McNamara's insane decision, probably related to cost). After these issues were remedied in Vietnam, the M16A1 was much more reliable.

classic picture love it

bottom line
this gun sucks. i dont care what you think. the M1A2 thats a better version. the orignal sucked, jammed when dirty, many of our men died in vietnam becuase of this. and the low ammo

Man that guy just can't take his finger off the trigger --- that's NOT a safe habit.
If I tried the same tomfoolery at the local shooting range, the Rangemaster would kick my ass!

Oooh Chromed bolt carrier pron

personaly if i were to have gone off to the army id rather qualify with an m14 than an m16....rough powerful raw killing power. plus its basically a sniper rifle as far as accuracy and range go. more reliable too. although both rifles do work superbly well

yeap.. the a1 still works fine.. just came back from national sevice.. i used a A1..still accurate, amazing stopping power and most of all acurate.. thank you america!...
Does anybody know where i can find a civilian made copy of the M16 A1 today?

We don't have M16A1s hanging around active duty arms rooms anymore. If someone wants one he can buy one on the civilian market sans full auto capabilities.
