NAPLES: The ABC7 WhistleBlower has discovered thousands of people may have a criminal record and not even know it.Until last year, crimes such as having glass on the beach or fishing with two poles were considered misdemeanors in the City of Naples and stayed on the offender's record. ABC7 discovered there are thousands of people who paid their fine or did their time, but still have the word misdemeanor on their record.

In 2006, the city re-wrote its code and dropped the words "second degree misdemeanor" from the books. It's now called an "offense against the city." The change will affect future violators, but doesn't help those who were cited in the past.Naples City Attorney Bob Pritt says he doesn't really see a difference between second degree misdemeanor and offense against the city."That's in the eye of the beholder," said Pritt. But people want others to know about their possible criminal past.According to the city, they don't have the power to declassify misdemeanor charges from the past. ABC7 has found a way you can clear your record -- you can apply to expunge it. The first step is to contact the Collier County Clerk of Courts at 239-732-2646.
