These have to be the biggest Helvella lacunosa In the world? Have not seen bigger anywhere and no field guides assume they top out at 6 inches, well the long one I hold up measured 11 inches. Sea King helicopter flys by on manouvers November 4th 2010 Helvella is known to contain methylhydrazine which is used by the space shuttle as rocket fuel!! Yes you can eat it but it must be cooked in order to vaporize the toxic substance. After that it tastes like morels to me.

  • Yes they look good to eat but I can't bring myself to eat them regularly either. This is an interesting area in that everything growing here is abnormally large. Morels pop up here in March as well and are 6 to 8 inches long. I tried burning these Helvella because they have rocket fuel in them, but nothing exciting happened. Smelled weird though.

  • @vanislander39 No need to parboil... simply cooking them thoroughly will do the trick.

They make a wonderful substitute for pasta.

  • They are much larger than what I typically find. I am reluctant to try them..parboiling twice before cooking to remove toxins isn't something I am prepared to do. It sounds like they are delicious as well. I will make do with the plethora of other fungi.
