The First in Europe: cownose ray born in Rotterdam Zoo
In Rotterdam Zoo's Oceanium a cownose ray is born. As far as we know this is the first successful breed of cownose rays in Europe. The pup, probably a female was born on November 10th 2010. Two days after its birth this vulnerable animal was caught from the big tank and put in a small circular tank behind the scenes. At first the pup did not want to eat but after a month it accepted hand feeding as you can see in this film. This is important because we feed our rays by hand to prevent that other fish will snatch the food away. Cownose rays are rather slow but big eaters! Read more on http://www.rotterdamzoo.nl

A young cownose ray has been born in the Ocenanium aquarium at Blijdorp zoo. As far as the zoo knows this is the first case of reproduction by cownose rays in Europe. There are a few cases reported from the US in part of these cases there were pregnant females captured from the wild.

The little ray (probably female) was born on 10 november 2010 but has only recently been visible to public. By now it has learned te eat out of the zookeepers hands which was important because thats
