In one of the most remarkable transformations of musical material - in this case Paganini's well-known 24th Caprice - Rachmaninov manages to create the most heart-warming music that has become so iconic. Once synonymous with the film "Somewhere in time", the 18th variation is performed here as an encore by Albert Tiu and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, conducted by Ya-Hui Wang.
As soon as Albert Tiu touches the keys, you know that he will deliver yet another magical experience, like he always does. Just ask the girl violinist who is clearly moved. The conductor and orchestra deserve much praise for their very sensitive playing. Phrases have been worked on and they just melt with the piano. This is music for the soul.
