The ancient greeks have been pondering that for centuries, same with the philosophers in the enlightenment. Both McCarthy and Reagen were Anti American for the advocation of the denial of free speech and the imprisnment of people who follow different ideologies and for violating the ideas the founding fathers had

McCarthy was right. The Venona Papers show conclusively that there were Soviet spies working in the upper echelons of the US government, including Truman's Secretary of the Treasury, and several key Truman advisors.
