Rounding an upwind mark to starboard is a completely different beast than rounding one to port. Here we walk through some of the basic situations you may encounter and the fundamental rules that apply.

  • totally agreed, a lot of these videos are meant more for beginners who are first starting to team race.

In team racing the 2 boat length zone is used instead of 3.

If you tack inside the zone you don't lose your rights, you simply turn off rule 18. Check out 18.2(c) and all of appendix D

  • @rynnepf I appreciate you clarifying that boats don't "lose their rights" but rather Rule 18 no longer applies in the scenarios you're addressing. You mentioned 18.2(c)...I agree. And also 18.3 further penalizes tackers in the zone, correct?

Helpful videos and analysis. Thanks for posting. I'm a college Laser sailor who hasn't sailed at all in over 20 years, and these discussions are very helpful to me. Again, thanks.

  • Quite good video, but in real life team racing, sailors A. are much more aggressive. and B your sailors are still obviously begininers considering they have trouble tacking, I thought that if you tack in the three boat lengths u lost all your rights?
