A number of beginning guitar players have asked me about root notes on chords, and how they work, and why. It seems people commonly get confused with what the 'low' note is, and what the a 'high' note is on the guitar. This video will explain that.

Typically, the root note is the lowest note in the chord, however as you start using more advanced chords you'll notice this isn't always so. 9 times out of 10 though, the root note is the lowest, and in pretty much ALL of the chords that beginner guitar players use, the root note is indeed the lowest note.

  • Great lesson Jonathan , I see you have demolished that wall from the other videos !

  • @DamianSix66 Haha, yeah, well if I had actually demolished the wall I think my house would fall over, but I did indeed get a fancy new background. I still kind of liked the bricks a little though... I guess the jury is still out on that one :-)

  • sooooooooooo can someone explain to me, in simplest possible way, cuz im hopelessly lost the guitar. but in relation to a band instrument. u have ur B C Db D Eb E F Gb G Ab A and B again. does it have specific notes like that? like i dont completely understand what cords are either. are they the key signature? plz help.;3 im a dumbass

  • I learned something new! Of course everything is new at this point, since i've only been playing a couple of weeks.

One thing I'd suggest is breaking stuff up a little more. We beginners start getting overwhelmed with too much information. I see so many videos about the guitar on here that start with a good basic point, but then devolve into "oh... and you could play the chord like this.... or like this... or like this"... and I end up walking away confused.

  • great lesson thanks!

  • I got distracted by the ticking clock.
