@flastatesoldier So far, I'm still not sold on all the hype. He's been solid at times but just as I said, he struggled at times versus quicker DTs (e.g., Oklahoma & Clemson; those guys are pretty good). At times he seems unsettled but other times, not so much. At times, he's a bit slow getting to the second level. Sometimes he plays too high. He did get beat by some VERY good DLmen. If I had to give a grade average so far, it'd say between 75-80. Good but not quite Hudson-esque.
@johnduncan77 yea, him and urban swept through central and south fla till he left a few years ago. Jimbo, Coley but esp coach Haggins are the reason were landing such good d linemen lately. With Charlie Strong and Urban gone and Miami caught being miami, i like fsu's chances for the near and far future. Also idk, jacobi was madison county and state gets a shit load of players outta there.
@flastatesoldier I'm familiar with Jernigan. Be glad Charlie Strong took the Louisville job because both of them (Jernigan in particular) would be in the Swamp. That would be one scary rotation had it come to pass- Floyd, Easley, McDaniel & Jernigan. McDaniel (from what I recall) saw the chance to not only play both sports but play both early. Now, it looks like he's sticking with football.
@johnduncan77 yea i iknow, hes def not where pouncey was as a junior, i was just saying what i saw. our entire offense got beat really so its not like his performance was atrocious or anything. Most of his, and the rest of the teams, errors were mental. O and mcdaniel still plays d line and seems to be dedicated to it. He'll likely start (with jernigan pushing him in the 2 deep, that kid is a true freshman beast if u like d linemen check him out) so i assume hes taking football seriously
@flastatesoldier One of two things can be said. One is that was just a bad practice. Two (at least some of) my comments have some merit. Your guys always have decent DL. BTW. Is McDaniel still playing or did he take the baseball route?
@johnduncan77 so fsu had an open practice today in the stadium for fans, media, etc. and just to note fahrenkrug, he looked pretty bad (though the rest of the line looked equally as bad if not worse, though our d line is =O) When they were doing passing drils w/line full blocking he missed two assignments in pass protection. when they did 1 on 1 drills dawkins beat him and someone else, i forget, beat him twice.... we will get better but he didnt look great. still high on him though. GO STATE
@flastatesoldier I should summarize a little better. My thing is that sometimes (from what I see here) his technique is not as good as it could be. Too aggressive (as you said) and sometimes plays a bit high. This tape did have a mix of FR & SOPH years. I named the guys since they came to mind & will face this year. Nice to talk some football. I measure centers by two names- Dominic Raiola & Mike Pouncey. Both had power & VERY solid technique. He could end up like them but time will tell.
@johnduncan77 quite the contrary, he is a better run blocker than a pass. The only complaint is that he is TOO aggressive and over attacks on his pass blocking assignments. u might not see it here but ask any of the fsu staff how he looks, tricket said hes better than mcmahon, thats big praise...i wouldnt worry about name dropping a few d linemen as he will have plenty of practice going up against one of the top dlines in the nation...
The physical tools are there as far as size and power. My concern about him is explosion/quickness off the ball. I don't see it here (at least on a consistent basis). I think he'll have problems blocking guys like Sharrif Floyd & Domonic Easley (Florida), Marcus Fortson (Miami) and other interior linemen with good strength/speed. Floyd had a decent game against Hudson & he was a true freshman. Backers are also faster and could have issues blocking them down field. The raw talent is there.
despite droping his head on a few blocks and not blocking until the whistle this kid looks pretty dang and with tricket coaching him look out this guy is headed for exceptional just remember what he turn hudson into and going against Mcdaniel everyday can only make him better GO NOLES
