I live in Sri Lanka and often ride the trains.
None of the trains left by the British are in operation any more, the locomotives then were steam engine type. The present trains are all diesel driven locomotives that are Canadian or Chinese built.

A 100km ride is 1 about euro, so there is no money to keep everything well maintained. People are against higher fees so things won't improve.

Why aren't there any toilets in trains? And Don't the Sri Lankan Railway guys want to develop the railways?? They can even seek assistance from Indian Railways. I hope you've heard of the Boat Mail from Sri Lanka to India's Tuticorin(?)

Nah they dont have any faster train than this. Even these trains are not their own ones. When British leave the country, they left their the trains to remind the British Empire.
