Singapura, oh, Singapura,
Sunny island sets in the sea.
Singapura, oh, Singapura,
Pretty flowers bloom for you and me.
Come along join the song in merry singing,
Blend our voices,
Join in the chorus.
Singapura, oh Singapura,
Pretty flowers bloom for you and me

The above community song (Singapura, Sunny Island) with its simple lyrics and is paired with an equally simple yet memorable tune. This composition is easily recognisable as a Singapore song; It is a patriotic song that paint a vivid picture of life on the sunny island of Singapore and is a popular song that has been sung by many local singers. The Malay version of the song is sung by Sandra Reemer in 1962

----------------------------------

Barbara Alexandra Reemer 芭芭拉亚历山桑德拉 was born October 17, 1950 in Bandung on Java, Indonesia), daughter of Frans and Nel Reemer. The Reemer named her Xandra. She is a of white Dutch, Chinese and Javanese extraction. She was launched at the start of the 60s as a child star with an amazing voice.

In the late 50s, the Reemer family leaves the country of Indonesia and arrive in the Netherlands in 1958. They settle above a cafe in a small town called Sint Michielsgestel. Little Xandra goes to school where the nuns change her name into Sandra. When she turns ten years old, she gets a hand-made guitar from her father and she starts to play in public and enter song contests. In April 1962, little Sandra appeared on the famous KRO radio show De Springplank and was quickly noticed by bandleader talent-scout Frans Kerkhof. He took her to Philips Records for an audition. In the early 60s, Sandra's first single comes out. Her Dutch version of "Al Di La" is the start of a big promising career in the Dutch and international music industry and shot to stardom . As a child-star she scores many hits like; "Sluimer Zacht", "Een bos Rozen" and "Teddy Song". She also makes it to many hit lists of countries like Japan and Indonesia.

Sandra's rendition of "Al Di La" in Bahasa Melayu was cut in 1962 by PHILIPS. The final of four songs from her EP that included Kopi Susu, Nona Zaman Sekarang and Singapura. Sandra was not even 13 when she released this EP of 4 Malay songs in 1963. All her Malay songs busted the Singapore and Malay hit charts which was broken later by another "Indo girl" Anneke Gronloh {originally born in Celebes} with her songs "Boeroeng Kaka" and "Asmara". Anneke still reigns supreme in Singapore and Malaysia for her old classics. Singapura by Sandra is of the most sought after EP record among 60s local music lovers.

She has represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest on three separate occasions (1974, 1976, 1979), tying with Corry Brokken for most appearances representing the country. In 1972, she sang the song "Als het om de liefde gaat" in a duet with Dries Holten (she was credited as "Sandra," he was credited as "Andres"), receiving fourth place. In 1976, she performed solo credited under her real name, singing the song "The Party's Over," which made it to ninth place. In 1979, she was credited as "Xandra" and sang the song "Colorado," which placed twelfth. The duo consisting of Sandra Reemer and Dries Holten. When they started working together in 1968, they both had full careers behind them: Sandra as a teen pop star and Dries Holten - with Dutch "carnival" repertoire. Besides that, he'd recorded together with the Jolly Jokers and as Andy Wood. Sandra and Andres split up after a great number of hits in 1975 and both went solo. Though Sandra Reemer was not quite of the indo-rock genre, it is noted that the movement of Dutch-Indonesian musicians who repatriated to the Netherlands in the 1950s led to a new music subculture which was popularised in this region. Other Dutch-Indonesian singers of the pop vein include Anneke Gronloh and the Blue Diamonds.

Like Anneke Gronloh, Sandra has maintained her longevity in show business for 50 years and is still performing today.

In 1966 Rebecca Pan 潘迪華 from Hong Kong recorded and sang the Mandarin version 《夢中故鄉》of Singapura.
