Anyone know what made the EMD SD-45 locomotive so different from other EMD models produced? The EMD SD-45 had a 20 cylinder diesel engine vs all models before and after this one had 16 cylinder engines. The 20 cylinder diesel engine was not really successful for EMD as they broke crankshafts.

@Slickrick1853 I bought the 1st generation Aristo SD-45 which were Rio Grande units and had lots of problems. Constant loss of power to the motor blocks, many tear downs to find out why, it was not a track voltage problem. The 1st generation also had plastic gear drives, the 2nd ones came thru with brass gear drives, Aristo refused to upgrade the 1st ones for free. Finally I had enough and sold them. I got USA Trains SD40-2 locomotives to replace them. 7 years later they are great

I think I am. I have an LGB Denver and Rio Grande MLW 535E. Its nice but it didn't exist. Alco/MLW never made a 535E for D&RGW RR. They only made them for White Pass and Yukon. Besides that its an ugly ass train. The problem is all my cars are LGB which use the hook and loop coupler and the Aristocraft uses the knuckle coupler. I'm going to have to switch and I'm thinking of getting the kunkle coupler because its more realistic.

fantastic video!
How are Aristo Craft Trains? I own all LGB but I really like the Aristocraft SD-45 D&RGW. I was thinking of getting one but I don't know alot about Aristocraft. I'm not sure of the quailty of thier trains overall or the motor's in the trucks. Aristocraft trains are pretty cheap in price compared to LGB's and I wasn't sure if cheaper price meant cheaper quality. I don't want to spend alot of money on Aristocraft if its going to be unreliable.

@Slickrick1853 ....I own plenty LGB and know how robust and well made they are with Buhler motors. I'd say Aristocraft are an exceptionaly good brand of train in quality, strength, reliability and finish and i personally love them. Never had any problems and they do come with a 5 year guarantee should you need them repaired. I feel Aristocraft have less of a ' toy look ' that LGB often reflects. Aristocraft motors are very reliable in my opinion. Go treat yourself to an SD-45, you'll love it.

@Slickrick1853 ..i will be putting out a video shortly on the Aristocraft SD-45 and i have another SD-45 ordered in the same road name. These are big, heavy, well made locos and detail is of a very high standard. You will not be disapionted my friend. Go to your nearest large scale retailer and ask to see one in the flesh. Aristocraft prices are more affordable but still offers you a high quality model. I own around 15 Aristocraft Locomotives and havn't had any problems. Regards....GPWdotCOM

What sound system did you use? I'm trying to decide which system I want to buy for my SD-45

This SD-45 is using Phoenix sound sytem, around £230. ARISTO-CRAFT sell a more basic, cheaper soundboard unit if your not intending to spend as much. GPWdotCOM
