A beautiful song with an important but sad message. My mother used to make fun of this song but, God rest her soul, she didnt get what the song was about.

@vegas2008 I was 11 when I first heard this and although I couldn't figure out what it was about I felt really sorry for Suzanne Vega LMAO

@Elizabeth5830 Sometimes children aren't hurt directly. Sometimes we don't grow up violent. But it takes a strong effort to realize that what you've seen is not how things are.

By the time I heard this song for the first time and I got to the lyrics (as English is not my mother languaje) it filled an empty space in my soul, my mother used to argue with his boyfriend a lot, and sometimes I wasn't safe either... so true.

@Hornet85 The child that lives with violence grows up violent. Unless they learn "The Buck Stops Here" Sadly most do not. God damn their parents. Why breed if you don't want to love your precious children. From New Zealand. ONE LOVE. Elizabeth5830.
When this song came out, I was in grade 10. I was 15. Back then I just thought the melody was cool and I thought Suzanne Vega was cute. Now that I am older with a 12 year old boy and a 9 year old girl of my own, this song almost brings tears to my eyes when I listen to it.

This song brings back alot of sad memories.
Till this day, I still disagree with parents intentionally hurting their child just to vent their anger or for whatever. The child never learn why that way, just fears.
