This home brew amp put out 3KW the first time it was fired up. After tuning and a few mods it eventually did 5KW on the 11 meter CB band. It was created for mobile use!

The rig? A 1963 Ford pickup with a small block chevy under the hood, a Dodge rear axle and a datsun 4Cyl engine in the bed to run the 12KW Genset that powered the AMP.

The only thing in the cab was a basic Cobra 40 Channel CB. There was a remote start for the 4Cyl genny and the amp could be online within a minute or so. The driver amp was a solid state 500 Watt brick if I recall correctly. The output tube was an Eimac 3CX5000. Video was shot May 19th 1989.

  • @rumproast2000 its easy, cb and ham r worlds apart. cbers like to run loud radios with lots o power.and is cheaper than a ham who likes to run a legal 1500 watts if they can aford it most cant aford it.and cbers have been running illegal amps for at least 40 years that ive been in cb.and plenty of hams run illegal. so realy who cares as long as we r all havng fun at our hobby.

  • Hams, I wouldn't fret over this. Enough rf exposure will weed out the gene pool in time. Just let time do it's thing.

There's the point! I never could understand the arguement between hams and cb-ers. It's the same hobby, for fraks' sakes! Is my RCI-2970 DX a ham or a cb?!? I'm pirating on 11m w it using as a cb locally, and having nice long dx-es w Brazil and Down Under. You've said it m8: having fun is the keyword! :D

  • @TheSirOrion I can understand both sides, Ive been a Ham for over 18 years and in CB for over 40, used to talk every morning in my company truck barefooted (5 Watts)to italy to my friends over there. and do the same with 100 watt ham eqt. so it up to each and who cares about what others say anyway. The whole idea is having fun in the hobby screw everybody else.

I don't really get it. I've been 'round the cb for some time now, the strongest on the whiskey's was a Canadian fella' running at 2000 whiskeys. I use an RCI-2970Dx, 150w, more than enough, but have heard a guy in NYC, speaking on a portable of 10w and I live in eastern Europe, Hungary. Most of the dx-ers are 'round 40-100w max...

  • @matt9c1 Yeah, can you imagine what all that RF wattage does to a guy's testicles? OUCH! They'll be shooting blanks for the rest of their life!

It's like putting your junk in the microwave on high power.

  • That's a cool pickup!

  • @MrLorenzo300

I did not know they gave out a license to use a soup-up amp on a CB rig. Sorry, that's news to me… Jerk!

  • where do you get that wattmeter from?

  • this is amazing!! well done.

  • I thought this was a very nice looking effort.

  • @MrTdw1954 The 11 meter band is very dead during the night, but in the day it is wall to wall DX. Years ago there would always be locals on at night, but rarely now.
