For competitive swimming your main focus should be; perfecting the stroke as shown above but also taking fewer breaths per stroke - as taking breaths more frequently slows you down significantly.
A good tip for leg kicks (which is your powerhouse) - try not to make a splash and you will get the correct technique. Often it is hard to know otherwise without recording yourself.

Make sure to emphasize the high elbow catch to avoid slipping through the water. A good grip on the water allows the arm entry to be exactly at the retraction. It should be anchoring at a point in the water and moving the body over it.
