It seems as though Iran had a western-like culture before the revolution, i don't see anybody women covering their faces (well duh its a commercial!! LOL) and some had BLONDE HAIR!!! (they probably still do).....Afghanistan too had a western-like culture it seems but then the Soviets came along and screw it =(

@hamorabi8 The only dummy here is you, because I never said, nor implied that western culture is "superior" nor that is it the only one that is "civilized", you did. All I said was that Afghan culture was very "westernized" and women were more free than today (that's a fact). Don't be a bigot and attack people who have a different opinion from yours that is actually backed with facts and research.

@vpiedra1 I have never read a dummy comment like this. Do you mean that only Western culture is civilized culture or do you mean that western people are superior over other people. Western and more determinately European ethnics have won the race in the 19th century toward industrialization and liberation of the society from mythological institutions due to objective Geo-political reasons, not to be mentioned here. Do you think they will stay alone on top forever?

It was an open society and now it is being oppressed. Things were not perfect before 1979 but at least Iran was moving in a good direction. Now, it is going backwards. These hardliners do not want reform. They want to bring Iran to the Middle Ages while they live in the former palaces of the Shah enjoying the rich life.

@vpiedra1 I'm aware the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, but the soviets didn't screw up the culture of the Afghans. I'm not saying the invasion was justified, just saying it wasn't its downfall.

@NESHero Actually, before the Taliban even EXISTED (circa 1992), the Soviets invaded Afghanistan (late 70s) probably in '78. Since then, Afghanistan has been going downhill. It is true, however, that Iran was under the US installed Shah since the mid 50s, who was ruthless. This western culture was actually shoved down the Persian people's throats. Radicalism was their only escape from American Imperialism that wanted their oil. They (their government) haven't liked us since.
