Taniya Nayak, interior designer from HGTV's Designed to Sell, breaks down the many different types of carpet avaliable and the structure by which they are built:

"When you walk into a carpet store, there are so many options and styles. Knowing the jargon and types of carpets available can help make the selection process a little easier.

"Plush or velvet carpets are soft, smooth and elegant. These carpets are perfect for formal areas but they show every footprint. Saxonys are similar but not quite as smooth; so if footprints are a concern but you crave a traditional look, try a Saxony or a textured Saxony. These are in the CustomWeave New Classics Display.

Shifting to Dynamic Patterns, you can find loop carpets where the fibers make a continuous uncut surface that many people think of as Berber, which will resist crushing and matting. Cut and loop carpets combine the cut pile of a cable or plush with uncut loops. This technique creates unique geometric and overall patterns.

"In CustomWeave's Textural Effects, shags, friezes and cables offer lots of decorating options. Large, nubby yarns that lend luxury to a casual setting characterize cable carpets. Friezes are highly-twisted yarns that feel bold and contemporary. Less full than shag, they are super contemporary and resist wear and footprints. Shags take height up a notch with a variety of thickness and texture for super comfortable and super trendy design.

"Adding to the type of design is weight and density. Density refers to the thickness of the actual yarn itself and how close the tufts are placed together; the higher the density, the better the performance. Weight indicates how much fiber is in the carpet and is calculated using pile height and density. Heavier carpets may cost a little more, but perform better.

"There's a lot more to learn so get your ideas here at mohawkflooring.com or ask your retailer to show you examples while you're planning a room to make sure you get the look and feel you crave."
