The following words hold the spirit of the True Martial Artist.

You have the tools. Now it is time to build. Your daily life should reflect your journey; the path itself is your reward.

Embrace what you teach, and teach what you embrace. Consider the needs and feelings of everyone you meet. Always evaluate yourself, strive toward betterment, and lead by example.

Selfishness is your enemy. Do not act for your own needs and gratification, but for the good of humanity and nature. Good or bad, what is in your heart will be transferred to others. Unconditional love is your sword; it must remain ever sharp.

Teach cooperation over conflict. Those who would gain by suppressing others only suppress themselves. By helping others to grow we, too, grow. Do not lock up what you have learned, or you will cease to grow. Give your information freely, more will come. Do not worry that the supply will be exhausted, the circle of martial arts is infinite.

Maintain a humble heart. There will always be people ahead of you, and behind you. To boast about where you are standing is to forget where you are going.

You are a man of action, and action requires a cycle of mistakes and progress. Do not let your mistakes halt your progress, accept and embrace them. Do not be afraid to admit a mistake, this will breed mistrust among your students. Weakness suppressed breeds weakness; once exposed, weakness breeds strength.

Your students will be your mirror. You will reflect each other's strengths and weaknesses. When you look at your students, you are looking at yourself. They can help you monitor your progress. Treat them respectfully, and as equals. As they return your respect, they will learn easily. Those students who seem only interested in power and gain will find it difficult to become effective. It will be your job to show them the correct path. Do not worry about your teaching ability. If you believe in your inherent goodness and that of others, the process will be your teacher, as you teach the process.

Your most important life standard is the one you set for yourself. Discovering your own personal best is a lifelong journey. Look deeper into that which you have learned. Your techniques are your tools. Be patient, your mission will reveal itself.

Do not show favoritism in the Dojo. Treat everyone with loving-kindness. Do not discriminate for any reason; rather, remain fair and sympathetic. This does not mean you may hesitate to push your students beyond their limits, only that everyone deserves your best. Students that have a difficult time learning need the best instructor. Look at those students as your greatest challenge. As much as you can teach them, so also they will teach you.

Keep an open mind and work together with other Sensei. There is no superior Martial Art, only superior Martial Artists. It is up to you as a Martial Artist to learn from everything, and everyone around you. Good leaders are also good followers. Nature provides all of the answers. The most important thing is for you to provide the questions.

Desire is a double-edged sword; on one side is the key to understanding, on the other it is an obstacle to inner happiness. The time is now, and the place is here. Be sincere in everything you do, and people will gladly follow your path.
