I've discovered that videos featuring Māris Liepa, one of the most acclaimed Soviet ballet dancers, are disappoitingly few here on YT, so I decided to improve the situation. ;)

"Spartacus", ballet by Aram Khachaturian, choreography by Yuri Grigorovitch.
The Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, 1960s; Māris Liepa as revengeful Crassus (one of his best roles), Nina Timofeeva as Aegina.

  • Thank you!! Is this from the film of Spartacus with Vasiliev?

  • The film-ballet, yes.

  • Great clip, Arashi! :o) I wish our City Ballet would put this show up one of these days. We had Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet a few months ago, but nothing very interesting since.

  • It's a great ballet indeed but it requires some formidable talents to dance it well, all the four principals.

  • Liepa was so handsome, beautuful dancer:)

  • Liepa was a great actor as well as a great dancer. No one who danced Crassus after him came near his power and intensity.

  • So beautiful.. I wish I could go back in time and see any of Maris Liepa's performances. He is amazing

  • @csofan52

There's no historical evidence to back up your claim of him being insane or a megalomaniac. If he hadn't put down the slave revolt, there were plenty of other Patricians who were ready to do it. In fact, the Roman Republic and the Senate wouldn't have tolerated a situation in which Spartacus' rebellion went unsuppressed.

  • Phenomenal! He is like a dancing Roman statue!

  • Beatiful.Amazing ...Maris Liepa- THE BEST.BRAVO.

  • @csofan52 joke apart liepa created a mastepiece his crassus never will be paired.

  • @csofan52 yes but not good general fat small and bald much better liepa.or sir lawrence oliver in the movie.

  • Choreography captures the insanity and grandeur of Marcus Licinius Crassus very well! Crassus was admittedly megalomanic; this choreography does his memory justice.

  • really the evil made person.amazing

  • Absolutely breathtaking. Wish I had a chance to see the entire ballet!!!
