Matram - Agni

Agni was formed in 1996 and contributed two songs- Nayagan and Matram to Astana's debut album in 1997. Matram the song in this clip never had a video unlike Nayagan so here are some paper clippings of the band during its heyday in 1997. Matram is a mix of funk, prog rock, blues and rock infused with Tamil lyrics. It was the first of its kind back in 1997 in Malaysia. But unfortunately, since the Indian Malaysian market was flooded with bands like Keys, Carshwinah, etc the fans prefered dappa kutty, vothey adhi or "sambar rock". Agni never popularised its brand of Tamil Rock in Malaysia. Interestingly enough, today, Harris Jeyaray, AR Rahman have adopted a more progressive tamil music which includes funk. rock and blues elements which would suite bands like Agni. But sad to say it has taken 13 years to realise it. Enjoy!!
