  • Judith, your cops are bullies, that poor chinesse old lady that didnt even understand english, throwing to the ground and end up in hospital.... you call that only doing there jobs, you just as stupid as them...

  • All police should be carrying pepper spray, tasers & handguns. We don't send our soldiers into war without guns so why would we send our police into the front line without protection? Haven't enough officers been killed lately?

  • all police should be armed and in the right situation allowed to use em if the do gooders dont like this idea then maybe they should be on the front line to see wut its really like

  • And in my opinion New Zealand police should carry guns because of this safety, if we don't carry guns your gonna be less protected from crime. I am from New Zealand, but i also believe the NZ police should carry guns, because what if you go into a house? and your alone and there is another guy with a gun what are you gonna do if you only have a tazer?

  • Classic Americano? The main reason why American cops carry firearms in their holsters is because gang violence, murder, rape and other serious crimes like terrorism are way more serious in America than it is in New Zealand i'm not saying its not bad cause it is but safety is a number 1 priority anywhere you go

  • New Zealand is one of the few, if not only, country's in the world that has a problem with its police force carrying firearms. Most countries would have a problem if their police force didn't carry them. This nostalgic look at policing in NZ is nice to have but is practically deadly to the police officers.

  • All frontline police officers in Australia carry handguns and shotguns in the boot of the patrol cars, up until 1993 frontline police officers in Australia didn't carry guns because they didn't need to, since then frontline police officers in Australia have become more heavily armed with pepper spray and tasers, it looks like frontline police officers in New Zealand will eventually oneday need to carry guns aswell especially since gun crime is on the rise in New Zealand.

  • @bjh05 Tasers are highly ineffective, especially the X-26 model. They have an extremely limited range, limited voltage and are cumbersome to both draw and holster. They are also single-shot weapons. What is the use when confronted with multiple hostiles?

That is where firearms come in.They should be used as an exception to the rule, but freely carried by any willing officer.Officers should also be instructed more in hand-to-hand combat techniques.

  • We should not look to Britain for anything successful.

Tasers are ineffective both tactically and technically.I am of the opinion that an officer should be able to freely carry a rifle,sub-machine gun or handgun at their own whim(thus catering to the officers that don't want to carry).

I also believe NZ should seriously consider a concealed/open-carry endorsement to firearms licenses,so that ordinary citizens can prevent mass shooting sprees....robberies and the like.

  • Why should NZ police force be based on UK style Policing ? NZ police force should be policing, what ever way that they feel is necessary. To police the best and safest way. To not only protect the public, but the officers as well. A bureaucrats back room study, is no use to fount line officers, when when ugly situations are thrust upon them unexpectedly. You can not plan for every situation in advance, and get it right every time. And expect to have time to call for back up esp in rural areas
