Funny enough, the Contax G2 works exactly the same way. Focusing with the shutter button is very inaccurate, but using the rear AF button works perfectly.

man!!this helped alot,thanks bro

The reason it won't focus at the start of the video is you are too close to the subject. You have to use the macro function.
I really love my X100 and don't have any issues with the auto focus unless I'm working in very low light.

Perhaps you are too close to focus & if so macro is required. Also possibly you do not have the latest firmware 1.11. I have the x100 with 1.11 firmware and have NO focusing issues at all. cheers

May I ask....when you did have your X100, was using the combination of Manual focusing mode and then the "AFL/ AEL" button a workable all around focusing solution (with maybe a little fine focusing with the focus ring)? ...if it works, then I can live with that.

@CaptainMacNasty manual focusing is a nightmare unless you fix focus and don't change it - you have to turn the focus ring about 20 times to get from one end to the other, it is just way too slow.
Using the AFL/AEL button makes it easier to live with as it locks focus more often than using the shutter button.
Image quality from the camera is stunning, the closest you'll get to a Leica anywhere near this price, but the camera just gets in the way of you taking photos ultimately.

When you use manual focus and the back focus button the camera seems to automatically focus much closer and you don't have to set it to macro.
My guess is they limited close up focussing in AF because of the parallax errors with the viewfinder. When you select macro the camera uses the electronic finder or the LCD.

@SimonAtkinsPhoto you could be right, but it is a bit frustrating when you're trying to take images of things close up!
In any case, this camera got the usual X100 sticky aperture blade problem after less than a month and just over 2000 shutter actuations - I've lost faith in it and it has gone back for good. Such a shame as the images are outstanding when (and that's the biggest problem - when!) it works.

@1440hk - nope, running 1.11 and as you can see in the video, as soon as I press the AFL button from exactly the dame distance, it locks focus straight away so it isn't too close that it needs to go into macro.
