Beauty isn't in color but in features but in this country, anything close to white is considered beauty, that's how people thought back then and some still today and we have to deal with it but let's try to change that thinking now.
Many lighter hued black women faced a lot of discrimination in Hollywood by being told they were too light or not black enough for certain roles like Fredi Washington but when it came to showcasing black beauties, the lighter ones definitely were preferred because lighter skin is associated with white beauty and the chorus lines had to have beautiful women. There were beautiful browner women and they were shown but when it came to choosing beautiful black women, most were chosen by color.
Don't offend. Lighter toned black women are black too. The woman in the soundie is Mildred Boyd, a black actress and dancer who had to play maids, so she was obviously dark enough to play the stereotypical maid roles, only in the soundies and race films was she able to be glamourous and beautiful. When you aren't black as coal, you will appear lighter than what you are. Though in that era, when beautiful black women were needed, lighter hued ones were chosen because black was considered ugly
