Erie Lackawanna former railway, Preble-Decatur Indiana, also Wren, Glenmore, & Ohio City Ohio track right-away. Not much is left on the Indiana side. I like using the Google Earth program, you can still tell even if no tree-lines left, the dis-coloration of soil in most cases. A lot of the areas West of Decatur all the way to Kingsland where it crossed what is now Norfolk Southern, (New Castle District) has now been converted back to farm ground. I grew up West of Decatur, in fact in the recent photo I tracked down on-line of the E.L. heading into Decatur from the early-mid 70's may have our white house in the far background, I thought that was cool to find. In 1977 the Erie Western took over both the Erie Lackawanna and the 27 mile length of track from Decatur to Portland Indiana, former Penn Central, unfortunately that only lasted until 1979 : The Erie Western was incorporated in August 1977 and began operations under an Interstate Commerce Commission car service order on September 25, 1977 to operate freight service for 158 miles on the former Erie Lackawanna Railway main line from the Indiana/Ohio state line near Wren, Ohio west to Hammond, Indiana. The railroad also operated a 27-mile branch line extending from Decatur, Indiana to Portland, Indiana. Note: I mis-labled pic. in Ohio City of diamond, it was a tri-angular series of diamonds, the Erie Lackawanna ran East to Elgin, Spencerville then on into Lima Ohio. The Nickelplate also crossed in Ohio City, it ran from the West, Indiana then out of Ohio City East/NorthEast to Delphos. The Cincinnati & Northern ran North/South through Ohio City, North to VanWert, South to Rockford Ohio and beyond. The Spencerville & Elgin operated on the a portion of E.L., roughly the same time the Indiana Hi-Rail (Nickel Plate) still crossed this location from Willshire Ohio and further West from Pleasant Mills, Decatur, Peterson, Craigville, Bluffton, and on to Marion Indiana. I take it both the SPEG and the IHR both ended in that late 96' early 97' time-frame, I'm not real familiar with these East segments around Ohio City for sure. I know in my area, Craigville, the IHR removed track and burnt rail-road ties in open burn piles, I believe that was in early 1998 when that was done. I moved out here in April 1997, no trains ever ran at that point or after on the IHR West of Decatur. The segment about a half mile East of Craigville all the way to Bluffton and then further West is operated by the Wabash Central Railroad, WBCR, and still operates today.
