Kroger and West Dayton [Grocer bailed out on neighborhoods]!

Update: December 11, 2008. Kroger bailed out on Dayton, yet again. The Kroger Marketplace project fell through. Kroger wanted to build on a parcel of land near Wyoming and Wayne Avenues in the Twin Towers neighborhood. The Cincinnati-based corporation is felling the hurt also. The sales profits are down and I am aware that the project would not help with the recent economic turmoil in this city. The plan is off the table, and once again Dayton is faced with blight on a corner they once felt was going to revive the community.

January 6, 2008, Cincinnati based company Kroger finally closed the doors on West Dayton's only retail store. Now the people will travel to nearby Harrison Township (about six miles) from the closed Kroger. Or maybe they'll travel at least 10 miles to the Miami Township Kroger within the Moraine area? Who knows, but I guess now we as citizens of Dayton now have to deal with another vacant building or vacant lot!

It's kind of strange that a major grocery store decides to close, due to its lack of "profits".

It's kind of sad that the only major grocery store is closing. West Dayton is mostly an African American community. The simple reasons for this happening is crime, low income and poverty. Also having public transportation near businesses drive companies to close.

Kroger has been at that location for over 20 years. And it's a shame that this company is more concerned about profits not about the people.

This is not an attack on Kroger. But it's a message! I want people to see what I wake up to. It's not Kroger's fault for crime, poverty, and depression. They are making the best possible solution to save money. But at what expense?
