  • @godisanegro her point was not that she wants to live in a nanny state. the point was she wants to live in a society with compassion, not one where all relations are transactional

  • @hyndm agreed

  • No-- I don't agree that either. I would not attempt to tell people how to most nobly expresses their patriotism. That action (or lack of action) is the choice of the citizen. I think its more accurate to say that the message of the government after 9-11 was "live your life," or "Don't let the the terrorists disrupt your way of living."

  • Are you a libertarian? I just want be clear on your ideological perspective.

But the particular expressions of "live your life" that the government encouraged post 9-11 was to go shopping. Morrison suggests that that's not necessarily a bad thing. The problem is when being a consumer defines a call to patriotic duty.

Citizens choose to do what they want, no doubt. But market values should not primarily inform how government "leaders" regard the citizenry.

  • I don't want the government to come check on me, and make sure I'm okay. I don't look to the government when my life gets bumpy. My family and friends know the state of my life, and they don't need anyone to tell them when to ask me if I'm okay. If you were waiting for the government to tell you to check up on your mother after 9-11 something is wrong. Her point is flawed.

  • So you would agree that a call to consumerism is the most noble expression of patriotism?

  • Does anybody know where I can find the full length conversation?

  • So she is saying that no one stated that those directly affected by 9-11 were to check on their loved one's safety? I find that hard to believe.

  • She's a little too fluffy for me, politically.

  • Is there no limit to how much we can push people around before they get to punch back?
