When the chinese/han civilization developed in the Huang Ho River Valley 4 thousands years ago the area received MUCH more precipitation (rainfall).
In fact, it's guessed that 4 millenia ago the Huang Ho River region received nearly as much rain as the Yangtze River region does today.
