my clip comment:
A typical British trad jazz dance party.in the sixties.
This is prbably the only film made of The Chris Barber Jazz Band in the early sixties. We see Barber on trombone, Pat Halcox trumpet, Ian Wheeler on clarinet, Eddie Smith on banjo and Dick Smith on bass

  • does anyone know where they were playing in this clip? quite curious about the chinese character sign in the background

  • @Lamornachris You are, of course, quite right when you say "Db to Gb". I can't imaginethat they played it in those keys, however. Bands as good as Soprano Summit do the tune in Bb - Eb, so it's not only "corny trad bands" which use those particular keys.

  • Chris joins John mayall at John's 70th or 75th birthday concert. Sits in with the band on a tune or two. Available on dvd

  • Great!! Many thanks for sharing this one!!!

  • This and Dudley Moore was what my Dad was into... he moaned coz the Stones taking over the ealing club meant he was too scruffy to get in wearing his work gear & got pissed off that his local boozer in Greenford was overcrowded coz some Shepherd's bush oik & his mates were playing as the High Numbers... Who?

  • Actually they start in Db and move to Gb. (It only "usually" starts in Bb, when played by corny trad bands, which play almost everything in Bb, because it's easier for the horns.) It doesn't really matter which key it starts in, as long as it goes to the subdominant key, and Gb is of course the subdominant of Db, just as Db is the subdominant of Ab, so starting in Ab and moving to Db would work - it just doesn'y happen in this case.

  • @lesterwyoung

Reckon that's what they did. Slight changes in film speed would change the pitch slightly but not as much a whole tone, without slowing down the movement noticeably on screen. Nor would it do such an accurate key change. It would 'land in the cracks'.

Must add to that "I think!"

  • is Chris still Playing? I'd love to hear him in person

  • On this they start in Ab and move to Db. Usually, it starts in Bb and moves to Eb. Is the film running at a slow speed or is this what they actually did?

  • And - With that, I can safely say all the good music has been done. (damn glad it's been recorded!)
