John Sayles' script for this factual true-life drama won the WGA award, and he also appears in this made-for-television movie which premiered on the NBC network, Nov. 10th, 1986. The film focuses on the effects of toxic chemical defoliants dispersed by the U.S.governement in Vietnam .. the health consequences of exposure for Vietnam Veterans .. the offical stance and state of denial (and denial of benefits) by the government .. and the effort to establish the link between exposure to "Agent Orange" and the afflictions of thousands of soldiers exposed during the War. Central to the story is the Veterans Benefits Counselor, Maude DeVictor, who initiated the campaign (wonderfully realized here by Alfre Woodard), and Frank Coleman - one of the cancer-stricken vets (played by John Ritter). The film was nominated for 4 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Editing (Paul LaMastra), in addition to being nominated for 2 Golden Globe Awards - including Best Motion Picture Made for TV, and was nominated by the American Cinematic Editors for an Eddy Award for Best Editing of a Television Special (Paul LaMastra). 96 minutes; Directed by: Lamont Johnson; Cinematography: Larry Pizer; Editing: Paul LaMastra; Production Design: Anne Pritchard.
