Tom's mother was the Edyth Bunker of the Thirties. No doubt the actress was told to play the part of the naive mom who would never think her son was a gangster. Notice in the early part of the film, when the old man goes into Tom's room with a razor strap. The mom doesn't know what's going on, but figures she had better stay out of it.

hey does anyone know who eventually killed Tom (James Cagne) in the end? After he got took from the hospital by either Burns or Paddy? I'm wondering because Tom had sex with Paddy's wife when he was drunk and Tom's brother said he received a call from Paddy's man.
