Here is one of our 1905 Mira 18 1/2 inch Concert Grand console music boxes playing an old favorite of mine, "The Merry Widow" waltz or "Die Lustig Wittwe" from Franz Lehar's 1905 operetta of the same name. The operetta is based on a story about the efforts of an ambassador in Paris who tries to keep a rich widow and her fortune in the country by finding an acceptable local suitor for her. Regardless of the story, the song is absolutely lovely and has for many years been a favorite of mine to play on my phonographs and music boxes. I hope you enjoy this selection on our Mira music box here as much as I do and thanks for stopping in for a visit.

  • Just beautiful.

  • @bootsamou Thank you for the nice comment.

  • Hi MusicBoxBoy,

You have wonderfull selections. I am in the process of byeing a 18 1/2" Mira.

Question : Can these discs still be got, either originals or reproductions ???

The quality of the sound from your box is just great, do all 18 1/2" empress sound the same ?

Really nice to hear such wonderfull titles.

Best Regards from JIM in IRELAND

  • @321beethoven Hi Jim, Thanks for your nice comments. Original 18 1/2 inch Mira discs can still be found on occasion but finding them in excellent playing condition can take time. Reproduced Mira 18 1/2 inch discs are readily available but I have never owned or played one. I was very fortunate to have found this Mira as the sound is lovely. We own two of the 18 1/2 Miras and this one has the sweeter sound. Every music box has its own unique sound. Good luck and best wishes, MusicBoxBoy

  • Hi MBB, it's great, that you only play original discs. Such instruments aren't built any more, o you only should present the repertoire, which was made for these instruments (only reproducting original discs is a great work, especially for people, who have a damaged disc with this original melody). - If you like, you can present your 2nd Mira 18,5" box, when it sounds OK, for comarison.

  • This waltz I have on my Fotuna music box, together with the "Maxim" piece, which you can hear on the MusikalischeRomanzen channel. - At Jim: Some 18,5" Mira boxes have different keys to this one, but most of these models are tuned in F major like this one. There are also Mira 18,5" boxes, which are tuned half a key higher.

  • Hi again MusicBoxBoy,

Just a word of thanks for your reply to my enquiry about mira discs and the sound varieactions of mira boxes.

I have not yet got a box but hoping to aquire a 18 1/2" or a 15 1/2" or both soon.

I only hope i can get some discs like the wonderfull ones you have, also that the box will sound as good as yours.

Very Best Regards again and thank again from Ireland.

    JIM.

  • Wonderful *

  • @rupepill Yes, it's always a pleasure to see items that have survived in nice condition from a time so long ago.
